Closing Time
It was an incredible summer. The last four months have brought me a whirlwind of outdoor adventure, special moments, and a lot of birds. I expected to photograph birds more than any other animals since they are always in abundance here. It isn’t hard to walk to Westchester Lagoon, Reflection Lake, or Potter’s Marsh (among so many other places) when I want to find an active subject. While I did get a lot of time with sheep as well, I wanted to take a moment to extend a farewell to our neighbors of flight, as most of them are going to be leaving for the winter. From the swans to the ravens, the terns to the thrushes, it’s been a special summer:
I have had the honor of watching the Potter’s Marsh swan family grow.
I was able to observe two trumpeter swans at a very close distance without spooking or disturbing them.
I saw baby gulls bond with their mother.
I watched arctic terns feed their babies for hours, seemingly never finding enough fish.
I marveled at grebes and ducklings that successfully weathered stormy waters and skies.
I shared a Thompson Pass afternoon with two curious ravens.
This doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface. Until springtime, my winged friends.
